Tests in Itinere

From the next academic year also for the Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science) courses there will be a week of suspension of teaching activity, which can be dedicated, in addition to any ongoing tests, to seminar activities, workshops, visits, etc., as already happens in the other Schools of the University.

The didactic programming is not characterized by any change, so there will be ** 5 appeals ** of which 2 in the session following the semester of delivery:

  • Courses of the 1st semester: 2 exams in February, 1 in July, 2 in September
  • Courses of the 2nd semester: 2 exams in July, 2 in September, 1 in February

Moving course Ing. Elettrica

The Board just ended opened with a request from the Rector to move the Electrical Course to Bovisa due to the increase in attendance in the Leonardo Campus of the AUIC School and on the other hand from the need for a new section of the Biomedical course that in recent years has had a great increase that has led to the activation of a new section. This hypothesis of temporary transfer has emerged due to the free spaces already present in the Bovisa campus and because so far the School of Industrial and Information Engineering remains the only one present in both Milan campuses.

The request refers to all 3 years of the bachelor's degree, with the exception of the laboratory activities of the third year, which would still remain on Leonardo's campus, near the department.

No change of didactic-cultural character is expected. Opinions are requested from CCS and the School on "technical" aspects. The final decision will be taken by the Board of Directors.

The coordinator of the CCS of Electrical Engineering points out that the request came in a sudden and unexpected way. It is confirmed that it is true that the Course is strongly linked to the two departments (DEIB and DENG), but it is emphasized that in recent years the Course is closely linked to the world of Information Technology and therefore to the DEIB (present on the Leonardo campus) rather than to the DENG (present in Campus Bovisa). The student representatives also state that it is necessary to calculate the inconvenience caused to students for a possible move communicated in such a short time, for example for those students who already live in Milan and who have taken an apartment near the Leonardo campus.

In the CCS a table will be set up to discuss the decision to minimize the side effects, but the coordinator confirms that they will always be collaborative with the Decision of the University.

Guidelines for the thesis of English Language courses for Master's degrees:

Another point at the ODG are the guidelines for the LM thesis delivered in English, as currently many courses follow internal rules not shared by all, so we try to align them more.
It is proposed:

  • Thesis in English
  • Interview/presentation in English
  • Proclamation in Italian, a phrase of bilingual rite

There are quite discordant positions among the professors, in fact some point out that the presentation of the Degree is more a way to show families the work done, so supporting the interview in English can be limiting for this "ritual", while others argue that indeed parents are even more proud to hear their child speak in another language, still others defend the importance of the interview and the need to support it in the language of the course.
Professor Sampietro proposes to leave "freedom" to the CCS in the choice for the coming years, finding ourselves in a period of transition, given that the presence of foreign students is really limited.
However, everyone shares the idea of an abstract of the proclamation in English, and then follow with the institutional one in Italian, considering that the certificate that is being left is still from the Italian Republic.

Proposal reception day of the Graduations

Professor Ronchi, coordinator of the CCS of Gestionale, proposes a new method of reception for the day of graduation using information banners and information points with employees who leave maps of the university.

You need people to check the "noises" or noises during the early hours of the day.
Waiting room areas for relatives, with a small refreshment service, as they often have to wait for hours standing for buildings, or sitting in the interview rooms where an annoying background noise is created for the graduating students.

At the end of the day it is proposed to:

  • Give information of graduates to the alumni community.
  • Welcome everyone to an outdoor place to listen to a speech by the rector or principal.
  • Group photo and touch throw in the square.

All the members of the Council agree that the reception system must be improved, indeed some point out that this is completely non-existent today.

For the second proposal some doubts arise about the modality, considering that the students are many and that perhaps it is better to foresee a celebration a little more "Italian" or in any case characteristic of the Politecnico di Milano.

Tutoring funds

From this year the School changes a bit the rules for the management of tutoring funds for those Teachings shared by several courses: the School will give a number of hours of tutoring for a teaching to the Department, it will therefore be the Department to manage those hours as it sees fit.

Proposed teaching agreement with the University of Pisa

A proposal to spend a period of 2 months (August and September) at Fermilab and other large American research infrastructures is exposed. Only for LM students with at least 100 grades at the three-year degree. Content of the porposta:

  • Summer students at Fermilab and other US Laboratories (6CFU)
  • paid students and free structure (400$/month + free housing)
  • experience ends with a report and an examination

In 2016 4 Polimi students (2 Physicists, 1 Computer Scientist, 1 Chemist)

Some professors say they are against being able to give credits for this type of initiative. Our position, shared by other professors, is to have a limited number of credits obtainable, so as to further entice students to participate in these initiatives, considering that they offer very interesting experiences and often the support of these courses is much more demanding and remunerative than an exam.
