TURNINGSTUDENTS ON THE TABLE OF REVISION OF THE REGULATION FOR INTERNATIONAL MOBILITY
From the academic year 2013/2014, the call for international mobility, following a revision of form due to multiple criticalities, will change structure.
Here are the main news:
Each school appoints an international mobility commission
That will have the task of ensuring the efficiency of the international training project, verifying destination destinations, establishing eligibility and selection criteria, ensuring greater transparency
Assumption of the European scale of ects values for the validation of the marks of the exams carried out abroad
Each school must, before the student departs, communicate the scale of conversion values of the grade taken in the host university
Reformulation of admission criteria and selection of the school of architecture and society
Following many critical issues, it was decided to introduce analytical values to evaluate the candidacies of the School of Architecture and Society.
For engineering schools, creation of previously approved standard curricula
This facilitation is due to the fact that there is a large number of selected students who give up the program for lack of exams to be validated in the host school.
And here is the reason for the choices we have made:
SvoltaStudenti was born from the dream of a group of students, who 5 years ago found themselves agreeing on a fundamental point: a meritocratic university.
Meritocracy rewards talented people, people who achieve excellent results, without discrimination of social origin, guaranteeing equal opportunities and possibilities, attacking birth privileges and nepotism.
The origin of the term meritocracy, was coined by Michael Young with the famous "Equation of merit": I + E =M , where I stands for intelligence and E stands for effort, that is, effort, commitment.
With this magnifying glass, the current international mobility regulation has been revised (now you can find it on http://www.polimi.it/studenti/fai-unesperienza-allestero/progettidimobilita/), which regulates exchanges between students in the various universities around the world with which il_ Politecnico di Milano _intrattiene exchanges.
To ensure greater effectiveness of the regulation, the Didactic Commission, in the session of 10 July, resolved to set up a working group composed of CCS Directors, International Networks Manager Giancarlo Spinelli, Administrative Office Managers, Assunta Marrese Student Services Area Managers and student representatives.
The goal of this group was the reorganization and transparency in the mechanisms that every year allow 1200 students to gain an experience abroad.
During the various meetings we submitted to this table, after collecting opinions from the students, questions and problems, from which emerged some specific critical issues for each individual school.
In summary the main observations:
- In engineering schools, a high dropout rate was noted among the selected due to the problems that arise from the correspondence between the Polimi study plan and the study plan of the host universities.
- In the School of Architecture and Society, the selection is defined through the sole evaluation of the portfolio by the reference professor, a problem that is linked to the comparison between our type of teaching of architecture and that of the host university.
- In design schools, the validation of exams taken abroad is rechecked before being definitively approved.
In parallel, during the session of the Academic Senate of 17/12/2012, the opportunity was underlined to "establish and publish clearer rules to draw up the ranking of those admitted for the Schools of Architecture and Design by proposing new selection criteria, for example:
-evaluation of the Academic Curriculum (55%)
-examination of the portfolio (35%)
-propensity to exchange (10%)
….The President expresses appreciation regarding the validity of what has been reported but proposes to keep for the A.A. 2013/2014 the Call in the terms set out above, reserving the possibility of contemplating the suggestions set out during the drafting of the Calls for subsequent academic years and then submits the Call in question to the approval of the Assembly."
For some time we at SvoltaStudenti have been receiving complaints about the selection criteria of some schools and for this reason we believe that some of the processes can be improved, for example, giving more weight to the teaching career and to the papers, fundamental for the selection process.
We believe that the evaluation assigned by the professors in the first instance should no longer be subjected to subsequent evaluations, this would allow to streamline the bureaucratic practice and make the selection to an experience now considered almost fundamental for the university career even more transparent and unappealable.
